Valentine Tin Upcycled in Minutes with Chalkboard Paint

Instead of spending a lot on a paper box of chocolates, repurpose any tin and decorate it to give your valentine their own stash of sweets.

Skills Required: Beginner. It helps to have some experience with spray paint so you can get even coats on the tin. Just make sure to use several light coats over being heavy handed. Patience is a virtue with spray paint!

Hi there! It’s Amy from Maker Mama back with a fun creative reuse idea for Valentine’s Day! One of my favorite memories as a kid was every Valentine’s Day morning my dad would leave a mini heart-shaped box of chocolates outside of my bedroom door.

I’d love to pass along that tradition, and am putting my own thrifty twist on it with this Recycled Chalkboard Valentine Tin. You can repurpose any tin and decorate it to give your valentine their own stash of sweets.

DIY Valentine Tin

Here’s what you’ll need:

• Thrifted tin
• Sandpaper
• Chalkboard spray paint
• Chalk marker
• Candy (I love dark chocolate Kisses!)

Start by sanding down the outer surfaces of your tin. Just enough to scratch it up a bit so the paint will have something to grab onto.

Spray all the outer surfaces of your tin with the chalkboard spray paint, then use a chalk marker to draw a fun design on the outside.

You can use a permanent chalk marker to make sure your drawing doesn’t smudge. Now fill it up with some candy and send it to your valentine!

And sneak a piece or two for yourself!
