Brigadeiros Brazilian Chocolate Truffles Melt in Your Mouth

Remember this post from a couple weeks ago? Well, today I have a similar and equally delicious treat for you! These are called Brigadeiros (chocolate truffles) and they are a common Brazilian delicacy.

All About Brigadeiros

This candy has a very interesting history. When I looked up the origins of this treat, I realized they have only been a “thing” since 1945.

At that time, Brazil was holding elections for a new president. One of the candidates was called Eduardo Gomes, and he held the military rank of Brigadier.

Apparently he was quite the ladies man. He was single, and his campaign slogan was “Vote for the Brigadier who is handsome and single!”

Gomes hosted quite a few parties to promote his campaign, and to raise funds he decided to sell candy. The only issue was the lack of fresh milk and sugar, so his team had to improvise.

Instead of using those standard ingredients to make “the candy of the Brigadeiro,” condensed milk was the substitute. These chocolate truffles are now a huge part of Brazilian culture, and are eaten at birthday parties or reunions. They hold sentimental value for the entire country!

PS – Gomes didn’t win.

What is Brigadeiro made of?

There are only a few ingredients in this quick dessert, which I really like. You’re looking at condensed milk, cocoa powder, butter, and vanilla extract. The sprinkles are a little extra if you’re feeling fancy.

You’ll make these truffles on the stove primarily, so there’s really no baking. Once they cool, you roll them into balls, and the dip them into sprinkles or nuts or whatever else you like.

Do you refrigerate Brigadeiro?

Yes, you should refrigerate your chocolate truffles to keep them fresh. If you are serving them, take them out of the fridge about 30 minutes to let them come to room temperature a bit.

Technically they last for about 7 days with no refrigeration and 12 days with refrigeration, but I much prefer to keep them in the fridge.

Can you freeze them?

Yes you can! They’ll freeze well for up to three months. I would only freeze them once as opposed to doing it several times.

You’ll want to put your chocolate truffles in cute little containers for gifting (that’s a requirement, right?). It’s actually perfect for cookie exchanges!

The original recipe wont ask for vanilla unless you're making white choolate flavor. And nobody will keep it on fridge, they are supposed to melt on your mounth. Yes you can freeze it, but the texture and flavor wont be the same..
