This chalkboard project for back-to-school is one I’m really excited about, for a variety of reasons. First of all . . . it just sort of came together.

It started when I was browsing in the craft store and found a wood tree shape – then right next to it, I found a large wood canvas that made me think, “I could turn this into a chalkboard with some paint I have.”

Then I started thinking about the Duck Tape patterns I had in my stash and got REALLY excited! You know how it goes . . . it all just sort of flowed from there.

Before long I had a cute, woodland themed chalkboard that would be perfect for back to school or for kids’ room decor.

You can do my project exactly as is with the same colors and Duck Tape patterns – but of course I encourage you to coordinate with your own decor and theme.

As you know, Duck Tape has endless patterns and colors . . . think of the fun you could have! Here’s how I made this cool craft.

DIY Chalkboard from a Piece of Wood

Gather These Supplies

Woodland chalkboard step 1

Begin by painting the edges of your tree in coordinating colors. Duck Tape will be going over most of the front, so you don’t need to use too much paint for this step. Let dry.

Duck Tape scissors

Next you’re going to cut the Duck Tape – and before you do that, let me tell you a not-so-dirty little secret: Fiskars Duck Edition Scissors. These scissors cut Duck Tape like “buttah” with no sticking to the blades. It’s up to you, but I promise they are worth it!

Woodland chalkboard step 2

Add Duck Tape to the front of your wood shape. I started with the Forest Friends pattern for the “branches” area. This Duck Tape pattern doesn’t match exactly, but it’s fine . . you can get close. Cover the entire area.

Woodland chalkboard step 3

Once it’s covered, flip over your shape and trim the Duck Tape with your craft knife.

Woodland chalkboard step 4

Repeat what you did before with the trunk of the tree. Cut strips of Duck Tape, lay them down, and then flip over and trip. Your tree is done!

Woodland chalkboard step 5

I was SO very lucky to have the cutest wood acorns in my stash. I was so thrilled . . . I painted four of them in two shades of brown. I feel like they really make the project!

Woodland chalkboard step 6

The final step is painting the wood canvas. Add two coats of black chalkboard paint with a foam brush (let dry between coats).

Woodland chalkboard step 7

Frame the chalkboard in Green Duck Tape – then glue on your wood pieces with craft glue.

Prepare the chalkboard paint according to the instructions on the bottle (it’s really easy).
