Cool quote typography art costs a fortune in stores – but you can DIY it yourself for just a few bucks, with a lot of on hand materials.
Lately, there hasn’t been a day that goes by that I haven’t had typography art envy. From Etsy to Target, you can browse hundreds of beautiful canvases with inspirational sayings and quotes.
One of my favorite phrases is “love lives here.” When I saw a empty wall in our living room needed some love, I knew exactly what I wanted to do!
I’m a pretty impatient crafter (or should I say time conscience one?) Luckily, I was able to whip up this custom cutie in only 4 steps.
DIY Wall Art on a Budget
Gather These Supplies
- A blank 18 x 24 inch canvas. You can get a two pack at Michaels for under $10, throw in a 40% coupon and you’re golden.
- Acrylic paint, two different colors
- Sticker paper or pre-cut vinyl letters. Both can be found at any office supplies store or online
Step One: First Paint Color
Cover the entire canvas with one to two coats of your first color. This will be the color of the lettering that will show through at the end of the project. Allow 10-15 minutes to fully dry.
Step Two: Draw, Cut, Paste
On the sticker paper, you can either hand draw your letters like I did or print the words on using your printer. Make sure you are working on the front side and not the peel off backing.
Cut the letters out and arrange them on the dry canvas. When the placement is how you want it, peel off the back of the sticker paper and adhere the letters to the canvas.
Step Three: Second Color
Add the second color to the canvas, making sure the letters are flush to the surface. One coat will leave a distressed look while two coats will create a bold modern approach.
Step Four: Peel and Admire
While the second color is still wet, carefully peel the stickers off the canvas. Touch up any spots or leave it to give the art piece more character.
Allow the painting to dry at least 20 minutes before hanging. Then sit back and enjoy your work of art!
The total cost of this project was well under $15 and I had a lot of materials on hand. It was quick and stylish, which makes the craft even better!
A typography canvas from Target or IKEA would easily be cost between $25 – $100. In just a few steps, I was able to recreate something from a retail store and personalize it for our home.
