Healthy Green Smoothie Recipe

Do you love green smoothies? Because I do.

They’re a great way to pack in a ton of nutrients in one easy-to-drink package. Plus, they’re versatile and customizable, so you can create a smoothie that suits your taste buds and dietary needs.

The thing is, I’ve been through my fair share of recipes. I find that a lot of them either taste like hay or they don’t have all the healthy ingredients I know about and want in my smoothies.

Therefore I took it upon myself to make the ultimate green smoothie – with everything I like as well as some of the goodies I need.

Here are the secret “power” ingredients to this smoothie and some of the benefits:

  • Leafy greens – vitamin K, vitamin A, and vitamin C
  • Turmeric – anti-depressant, anti-inflammatory, arthritis management, cancer fighting, cholesterol regulator, pain killer, natural steroid
  • Coconut oil – anti-inflammatory, natural Alzheimer’s benefits, prevents heart disease, prevents high blood pressure, immune system booster, improves memory, improves energy, improves digestion, fat fighting

Some of these listed benefits are still being researched but hey, I’m going to take all the good stuff I can get.

The beauty of green smoothies is that they’re a great way to sneak in veggies that you might not normally enjoy eating. Plus, they’re a great way to add more fiber to your diet, which can help keep you feeling full and satisfied.

I know this green smoothie is tasty, filling, and makes me feel good/not like crap. Now that I’m 40, that’s my definition of a good meal!

This smoothie is gluten free, Whole30 compliant (leave out the optional honey) and vegan. Here’s how it’s made.

Serves One

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup baby kale (frozen)
  • 3/4 cup baby spinach (frozen)
  • 1 small ripe banana or half a banana (you can use frozen bananas too)
  • 1 cup almond milk
  • 3/4 cup frozen chunks of mango or 1 medium sized fresh mango, cubed
  • 1/4 tsp of turmeric
  • 1/2 tbsp coconut oil
  • Raw honey to taste (optional)
  • Handful of ice (optional)

Tips and Thoughts on This Recipe

  • If you need a blender recommendation, I love my Blendtec. It’s lasted for years and years with regular use and no complaints.
  • Don’t like banana or mango? People also use mixed berries, but any frozen fruit would work.
  • If needed, stir in honey to taste. If your banana and fresh mangoes are ripe enough, they will provide natural sweetness. Frozen mangoes can be a little on the tangier side.
  • Don’t be afraid to go outside this recipe and play with smoothie ingredients. You can add peanut butter, almond butter, greek yogurt, chia seeds, protein powder, coconut water, or anything else you want to try.
  • See how creamy your smoothie is and if you would like it a bit more liquid, add in ice until desired consistency.

Tip: I like to put my fresh kale and spinach in a freezer safe bag at least 3 – 4 hours before I make my smoothie.

I like my veggies to be frozen before I use them in the smoothie as I find they make a creamier smoothie AND I can taste them less. 😮

Love it! Is there something that I can substitute for the mangos, since I'm not a fan?

I would say peaches or papaya! Probably peaches if you're not a fan of mango since papaya is kind of close . . :D
