Halloween cookies recipe with M&Ms

Halloween M&M Cookies

Ingredients

  • 10 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 cup Halloween colored M&Ms

Instructions

In a large bowl, combine the melted butter and granulated sugar. Whisk to combine.

Bowl of melted butter and sugar

Add the egg and vanilla extract and whisk until thoroughly combined.

Next, add the flour and baking soda and stir just until no large lumps of flour remain.

Add the M&Ms and mix just until they’re combined– you don’t want to overmix. This will cause flatter, crisper Halloween cookies (boo).

Cover the bowl and transfer the cookie dough to the fridge to chill for 30 minutes.

M&M cookie dough ready to chill

While the cookie dough chills, preheat your oven to 350 F and line two large baking sheets with parchment paper or silpat mats.

Once the dough has chilled, scoop two tablespoon sized cookies onto the baking sheets, making sure they’re at least 2 inches apart.

Bake the cookies for 12 – 14 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown. Allow them to cool fully before removing them from the tray — they will set as they cool.

Ingredient Notes

  • Butter is the base of these cookies– I’m using salted butter but if you use unsalted, make sure to add ½ teaspoon kosher salt to the cookies (or flakey sea salt on top is also delicious).
  • Sugar sweetens our cookies! Brown sugar is also delicious in this recipe.
  • The egg helps bind the cookies together.
  • Vanilla helps enhance the flavor of the chocolate.
  • Flour helps give our cookies structure. Make sure to measure using the scoop and level technique so you don’t end up with dense cookies.
  • Baking soda helps keep our cookies soft and give just the slightest bit of rise!
  • Halloween M&Ms are my add-in of choice! Feel free to use whatever you like.
