DIY Lace Headband Made from An Applique

The most inexpensive way to make a lace headband? With an applique! And I’ll show you how to do it so you can reuse the lace.

Skills Required: None. Even if you’ve never sewn before, you should easily be able to make this headband. There are just a few stitches, and you’ll get the hang of it quickly.

Confession: I’ve had this pretty little applique sitting in my craft drawer for the longest time. Every time I cleaned the studio, I dreamed about using it – but never knew on what.

It was something I wanted to use on the right project. In a short amount of time, I was able to temporary adorn it as a lace headband while preserving the glue on the back of the applique in case a better idea came along.

Here’s what I used for this lace headband:

Lace applique laying on a work surface

Take the applique out of the package. Set the headband down and place the applique on top. Plan out how you want the design to face.

Hand holding a piece of lace on an elastic headband

You can use the elastic headband color of your choice. When you have dark hair you can use black and it will disappear in your hair. If you have lighter hair you might want to use white or another color.

Stitching a lace applique to an elastic headband with a needle and thread

Turn the headband and applique over. Using a needle and thread, secure the applique to the headband. You don’t want the thread to show so choose a color that will blend well.

Stitches on the inside of a lace headband

Start sewing from the back of the applique so that the knots will be hidden. I secured it in three places.

Black headband with white lace applique

Once you’re done attaching the applique to your lace headband, turn it over and give a few tugs to make sure it’s attached securely.

Then slip your lace headband on and look fancy! The applique detail is so pretty and would make a great accessory for any event.

DIY lace hair band

I had two weddings to attend this weekend so this might make an appearance. Now if only choosing an outfit was this easy . . .

When you want to return the applique to its original state, simply cut the threads using scissors (being careful not to cut the elastic). Now you can use the applique in another project!
