Equipment

Ingredients

  • Canvas 8-inch square
  • Magazine(s)
  • Mod Podge
  • Drawing or clip art optional
  • Transfer paper optional
  • Acrylic paint optional

Instructions

  • Decide on a design that you would like to use on your canvas. Either draw the image directly onto the canvas, or print it out and use transfer paper to transfer the image. To do this, place the transfer paper between the design and the canvas and then use your pencil to trace. When you remove the paper, the design will be left behind.
    Draw the Design on Canvas
  • Decide on a color theme and begin cutting pieces from magazines – starting with 1” squares typically works best.
  • Choose an area to begin working on. Apply Mod Podge to the canvas with a paintbrush in a small area, and place the magazine pieces down into the wet medium. Smooth with your finger. Remove excess decoupage medium with a brush.
Add Magazine Pieces to the First Area
  • Continue filling in an area using decoupage medium, and magazine pieces, overlapping as you go. You should also trim pieces with scissors so they fit in an area (it doesn’t need to be exact).
Continue Trimming Pieces and Filling In
  • Repeat the process in the previous step using additional colors, trimming pieces as necessary to fit.
    Repeat with Additional Colors
  • Proceed to fill in the entire canvas with magazine pieces, adding decoupage medium and overlapping as you go. Once the entire canvas is covered, let dry completely. Paint a layer of decoupage medium over the top of the canvas and let dry.
Finish filling in with magazine pieces and seal
  • Trim any magazine pieces that hang over the edge using scissors. Optionally you can add a band of acrylic paint around the edge of the canvas to finish.
