There is nothing that I look forward to more during the fall season than those cozy comfort foods. Once a year we get to enjoy anything apple, cider, and/or pumpkin.

Looking for an apple recipe slash dessert that is versatile? This tasty apple cinnamon roll monkey bread is a quick and easy treat for that perfect autumn morning or evening.

I had no idea that monkey bread got its name from the pastry being a finger food. And people pick it apart as a monkey would. But would a monkey eat the entire pan him or herself? It might need a new name. Or just go ahead and call me a monkey, because I’d eat the whole thing.

Other names for the bread include Christmas morning delights, monkey puzzle bread, monkey brains, sticky bread, Hungarian coffee cake, golden dumpling coffee cake, pinch-me cake, pluck-it cake, bubble loaf, and funky bread. That’s a lot of nicknames!

The one thing I love about this particular apple cinnamon version is that it’s not made from scratch. If kids are helping make this recipe, it’s a lifesaver. There are four ingredients, and it’s simple.

Cinnamon Roll Monkey Bread

What you’ll need:

Tools

  • Peeler
  • Knife
  • Cutting board
  • Measuring cups/spoons
  • Mixing bowl
  • 9-inch pie pan or bundt pan

First peel the skin off the apple. Discard the skin.

Use your cutting board and knife to cut the apple into pieces. You can discard the core.

The size pieces you use are up to you. To be honest, I like my apple pieces pretty small. You can dice them up large or small, depending on what your preference is.

Pop the cinnamon roll container and unroll. Separate all of the rolls on your cutting board.

Set aside the frosting packet for later. Cut each one into bite size pieces.

Again, you can cut the rolls into pieces as large or small as you like. I like smaller pieces, but you can just do quarters for each roll.

This part is so easy, I even let my toddler help! Dump the apples into a medium bowl. Add the applesauce.

Add in the cinnamon for your final ingredient. Note that it will smell amazing.

Mix well with a spoon. Spray a 9-inch pie pan with cooking spray. Note that most monkey bread recipes use a bundt pan, and you can do that here. I decided to try it in the pie pan and it worked well too. Either one is fine.

Spread the mixture evenly into the pan. Bake at 350 degrees for about 12 minutes.

Bring the monkey bread out of the oven and let it set to cool for a few minutes – just about five. You don’t want to put the frosting on immediately because it’s too hot.

  3. Dump the apples into a medium bowl. Add in the cinnamon roll pieces, apple sauce and cinnamon.
  4. Mix well with a spoon. Spray a 9-inch pie pan with cooking spray. Spread the mixture evenly into the pan. 
  5. Bake at 350 degrees for about 12 minutes.
  6. Remove from the oven and immediately cut open the frosting packet. Drizzle evenly over the entire pan.
  7. Serve hot and enjoy!
