This delicious hot chocolate recipe is so creamy and rich that it will put the hot cocoa packets in your cupboard to shame. So easy to make!
This weekend the temperatures are set to dip down low so I figured it’s time to bust out the hot chocolate!
Today I am sharing my favorite homemade version of a hot chocolate recipe, so creamy and rich it puts the cocoa packets in my cupboard to shame.
Plus, it’s really not that much more work to make from scratch and the results are so decadent you will die and go to creamy hot chocolate heaven. You can also make the mix ahead and store it for later.
Although, if you are capable of doing such a thing, your willpower should be celebrated with a parade. Here is how you make my favorite hot chocolate recipe!

Decadent Hot Chocolate Recipe
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
- 3 ounces semi- or bittersweet chocolate, roughly chopped
- 1/2 cup cocoa powder, any kind you like
- 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract or the seeds from a tiny segment of fresh vanilla bean
- 1/8 teaspoon fine sea salt or 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
Directions
Combine all ingredients in a food processor and blend until powdery or chop or grate the chocolate until it is as fine as you can get it, and stir it into the remaining ingredients. (Mixture keeps in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 months.)
Heat one cup of milk (coconut, almond or others would work here too) in a saucepan over medium heat until steamy. Add 3 tablespoons hot cocoa mix.
Whisk over heat for another minute or two, until it begins to simmer and mix is completely dissolved. Pour into mug, top with mini-marshmallows or a dollop of whipped cream.
Tip: to make in a slow cooker or crockpot, add ingredients to the crockpot and simmer on low for 1 – 2 hours.
