Learn how to make rainbow Easter eggs with food dye that kids will love! You can make these rainbow eggs easily – and they are edible. The colorful cracks are so neat and remind me of dinosaur eggs!
Skills Required: None. Even if you (and your kids) have never crafted before, you’ll be able to dye these eggs. Plus kids get to crack the eggs on purpose.
Do you love Easter egg decorating – especially with dye? Me too! Their bright colors just make me so happy! If you’re looking for a new, creative way to decorate your eggs this year, then today’s post is for you!
Recently my preschooler and I had a blast transforming regular eggs into rainbow “dinosaur” eggs. That’s what my son called them when he saw the final results. I mean ooh la la! Aren’t their colorful cracks so neat?
Here are the materials that you’ll need to make your very own rainbow Easter eggs.
Rainbow Egg Decorating
- Eggs
- Food Coloring
- Pot
- Cups
- Water
Let’s make some rainbow eggs!
Step 1: Hard-boil your eggs. Place your eggs in a pot and cover with 1 inch of cold water. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat and then cover. Remove from the heat and set aside 8 to 10 minutes. Drain and cool in ice water.
Step 2: In the meantime, pour warm water into various cups (you want to pour enough water into each cup so that your eggs are fully submerged).
Step 3: Add 10-15 drops of food coloring into your cups. (Note: Darker colors worked better than lighter colors. Our yellow and neon green eggs were not as vibrant.) Stir the water.
Step 4: Crack your hard-boiled eggs by gently patting them on a table top or crushing their shells in your hands. Apply enough pressure so that the shells crack but don’t break apart and fall off.
Step 5: Place your cracked eggs into your colored liquids. Then, place your cups in the fridge overnight so that the eggs absorb the dye.
Step 6: Peel your eggs to reveal their lovely, cracked designs! Since this is just food coloring, you can absolutely eat these eggs. Wouldn’t these be fun for a holiday lunch?
This egg decorating idea is so simple, and the kids will love it.
