This project starts with a blank canvas, a stack of colorful magazines, and the freedom to cute and layer your way to a one-of-a-kind masterpiece. It’s not just about making art; it’s about transforming the ordinary into something extraordinary, right from the comfort of your own home.
And the best part? You don’t need to be a Picasso or Van Gogh to create something visually stunning and utterly personal.
It’s a project that promises not just the joy of creation but also a wonderful way to recycle those old magazines that have been gathering dust. So, why not breathe new life into those pages filled with vivid images and captivating stories?
Whether you decide to go abstract with random geometric shapes or create a more structured image using a pre-drawn design, the steps are simple and the process is incredibly satisfying.
As you work, you’ll see your collage come to life, a vibrant testament to your creativity and vision. And once you’re done, just brush over a final layer of Mod Podge to seal your work, ensuring it lasts as long as your newfound love for collage making.
So grab those scissors, unleash your imagination, and join me in making a beautiful piece of art that’s as unique as you are. Are you ready to start this creative adventure? Let’s make something beautiful together!

Tips and Thoughts for This Project
These magazine collages are a unique take on vision board! Is there a special place that inspires you and makes you happy, like the beach or the mountains? Maybe there is a strength that you have or would like to have. There is a lot of flexibility with this project to turn your feelings into art that moves you and makes you feel good.
The smaller you make the magazine pieces, the more detailed you can make your “happy art.” Challenge yourself by doing a more intricate design with smaller pieces and more colors! You can also expand your work to a larger canvas.

Magazine Collage Art
Equipment
- Pencil(s)
Materials
- Canvas 8-inch square
- Magazine(s)
- Mod Podge
- Drawing or clip art optional
- Transfer paper optional
- Acrylic paint optional
Instructions
- Decide on a design that you would like to use on your canvas. Either draw the image directly onto the canvas, or print it out and use transfer paper to transfer the image. To do this, place the transfer paper between the design and the canvas and then use your pencil to trace. When you remove the paper, the design will be left behind.
- Decide on a color theme and begin cutting pieces from magazines – starting with 1” squares typically works best.
- Choose an area to begin working on. Apply Mod Podge to the canvas with a paintbrush in a small area, and place the magazine pieces down into the wet medium. Smooth with your finger. Remove excess decoupage medium with a brush.
- Continue filling in an area using decoupage medium, and magazine pieces, overlapping as you go. You should also trim pieces with scissors so they fit in an area (it doesn’t need to be exact).
- Repeat the process in the previous step using additional colors, trimming pieces as necessary to fit.
- Proceed to fill in the entire canvas with magazine pieces, adding decoupage medium and overlapping as you go. Once the entire canvas is covered, let dry completely. Paint a layer of decoupage medium over the top of the canvas and let dry.
- Trim any magazine pieces that hang over the edge using scissors. Optionally you can add a band of acrylic paint around the edge of the canvas to finish.
