Skills Required: Beginner. You’ll be using duck tape and hot glue, and the rest is simple. This is perfect for newbie crafters.
I absolutely love Dia de Los Muertos! If you haven’t heard of it, it’s a celebration held in Mexico to honor friends and family members who have died.
And honestly what I really love about it is how colorful it is: the art, the altars, everything. Because “hello, my name Amy, and I love lots of color!“
Day of the Dead Wreath
This Dia de Los Muertos wreath came together in a random way, as some projects do. I already had the base black wreath, and wanted to do a Day of the Dead craft project with it.
Then I went to Michaels and found some wood pieces to go along with the holiday – which coincidentally matched some Duck Tape colors I had in my stash. A little research led me to “making roses with Duck Tape” on YouTube, and it all just sort of happened!
I’m really in love with my calaveras themed wreath that I’m using for Halloween decor. The Duck Tape flowers are my favorite, and you’re going to love making them as well. They are VERY easy. Here’s how it’s done.
Gather These Supplies
- Black artificial wreath (you can get either lit or not)
- Duck Tape – Aqua, Electric Blue, Fuchsia, Neon Orange, Purple
- Dia de Los Muertos wood pieces – from Michaels (or online)
- Pipe cleaners – one per flower
- Fiskars Duck Edition Scissors
- Hot glue gun
Make the Flowers
Your first step is going to be making flowers. This is a task that you’ll want to do sitting in front of the television with a Netflix marathon.
Not that it’s going to take you THAT long, but it’s fun to sit in front of the tube and just knock them out. We made three of each color for a total of 15, and we used this video:
We used the pipe cleaners as the stems for our flowers, so we could easily bend them around the wreath, and that’s what we did.
Here are the finished flowers:
Attach the Pieces
The next step is simple. Just hot glue your wood pieces in various places on your DIY wreath. Add hot glue to the back:
Then attach directly to your wreath – on the “twigs.”
You can adjust the flowers as needed! Your wreath is complete, and you can easily hang anywhere you like.
Here’s a closeup of the roses. And overall I’m happy with all the fun colors! You should combine this project with our Day of the Dead printables for a real good time.
