Create Spin Art with Kids – No Machine Required

Remember spin art from when you were a kid? You can recreate it with household items, and no fancy machine. This kids' craft is SO fun!

Did you ever make spin art as a kid? I remember making spin art t-shirts using fancy machines. Hi! I’m Leslie from Pink Stripey Socks. Today I’m going to show you how to make modern spin art… without the fancy spin art machine! Yup. All you need is one kitchen appliance and you’re all set for some awesome arts and craft fun!

Before we begin, I have to first issue a warning. This activity is HIGHLY addictive. My husband, son, and I became infatuated with making spin art. We spent at least an hour squirting paint and watching swirling psychedelic designs magically appear!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAKids’ Spin Art with a Salad Spinner

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Old Salad Spinner*
  • Craft and/or Tempera Paint**
  • Masking Tape
  • Watercolor Paper Cut to fit inside your salad spinner

* Sorry, you’re not going to be drying lettuce with this baby after we’re done! I got a used one from the thrift store for a couple of bucks!
** We enjoyed using both types of paint. Their different consistencies resulted in different blobs and designs! But, if you’re working with young children I’d lean towards using tempera paint. It washes out easier!

Cover your work area. Then, tape your watercolor paper to the bottom of your salad spinner. Then, proceed to squirt paint onto the card! Definitely experiment with making blobs, lines, and curvy circles. Each of these will result in different types of designs!

Then, use your salad spinner. (This was my son’s favorite part!)

Open up your salad spinner to reveal your awesome design. If you’d like, add more paint and spin again!
Once you’re satisfied with your design, let it dry!

These lovely pieces of modern art are so simple to make and beautiful too! Pretty soon you’ll find yourself with a whole art collection! Frame them or turn them into notebooks, cards, or bookmarks. The creative possibilities are endless!

I have got to try this! :) And I'm tempted to use my nice salad spinner but will be strong and go to the thrift store to find one. :) :) This would make such a cute set of cards to give to someone. Do you think this method would work with smaller, business card sized cards or would they flip over in the spinning process? I'm just wondering because these would be super cute gift tags!
